Per information from Israel, a minimum of 98 detainees from Palestine have perished while in custody starting from October 2023. A human rights group located in Israel has reported that the real number is likely considerably greater, as a result of hundreds of disappeared individuals in Gaza.

Study Results

Despite the aggregate figure of fatalities recorded being much greater than previous assessments, it likely does not reflect the full scale of Palestinian casualties, as stated by the director of the prisoners and detainees department.

“Even though we are offering documentation for a larger total of deaths than earlier indicated, this is not a full picture,” he explained. “We are confident that there are yet people who died in detention that we have not identified.”

Civilian Casualties

Classified Israeli data suggests that the vast majority of Palestinian detainees from Gaza who perished in prison were non-combatants, based on a parallel inquiry.

During May of this year, a military intelligence database following all militants in Gaza, a registry of over 47,000 listed people, documented just 21 casualties in confinement. By that point, 65 Gazans from Gaza had lost their lives in jail.

Prison Situation

Assault, abuse, and other abuse of Palestinians is now standard practice across Israel’s detention facilities during 24 months of conflict. High-ranking authorities have publicly referenced starvation rations and an underground jail confining detainees who are denied sunlight.

“In spite of this mass number of deaths, during 24 months no one has faced arrest,” the representative stated. “There have been no prosecutions over any death.

“As long as these practices remain in effect, every Palestinian in custody faces risk, also the healthy ones, also the juveniles who have no medical issues.”

Prominent Examples

Certain fatalities in detention have been publicly known, such as a middle-aged healthcare leader who perished in prison after 120 days in confinement.

A prisoner detained alongside the victim stated that he was taken to the courtyard by guards just prior to his death, clearly wounded and naked from the waist down. His remains remains unreleased to Gaza.

Further inmates who lost their lives in Israeli custody stay unnamed. The prison service and defense forces gave researchers with the figure of deaths in detention, and basic additional information including the site where they lost their lives, but without the prisoners’ names.

Recognition Difficulties

For 21 instances, mainly people from Gaza, researchers were unable to correlate the minimal data given by authorities to a fatality documented by rights organisations, via statements from former inmates or reporting in the media.

The detainees’ families could be unaware about their relatives’ casualties either, as Israel has created obstacles to locate Palestinian individuals it is holding. During 210 days at the beginning of the war, the defense forces refused to supply essential data about the condition of many of individuals held in Gaza, in effect enacting a approach of forced disappearance, according to the advocacy organization.
